Chmiel projects 2024

Reflecting on 2024

‘TIS THE SEASON

As we close out another remarkable year, Chmiel Architects wishes you a holiday season filled with joy, peace, and meaningful moments shared with loved ones.

Reflecting on 2024, we are incredibly grateful for the projects we’ve had the honour to bring to life. To our clients, thank you for trusting us and collaborating with us to bring your vision to life. To our partners, suppliers, and team, your creativity, dedication, and expertise consistently inspire us and drive our work forward.

In the spirit of the season, Chmiel Architects has made donations to the Ottawa Mission and Cornerstone Housing for Women. Supporting these vital organizations aligns with our belief in building stronger communities, not only through design but through compassion and care.

Here’s to another year of creating, collaborating, and pushing the boundaries of what’s possible in architecture.

2024 PROJECTS IN REVIEW

Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons | Ongoing Renovations. This ongoing multi-year renovation project combines modern functionality with the timeless elegance of the heritage building. As we progress, our focus remains on enhancing accessibility and creating vibrant spaces that honour the traditional architecture while meeting contemporary needs.

Collège Boréal  | Nearing Completion. Collège Boréal engaged Chmiel Architects to design their new 12,500 sq. ft. Ottawa Campus in LaFramboise Hall, a heritage building requiring extensive renovation. The project includes classrooms, science labs, a student lounge, and offices, with a design that introduces contemporary elements while retaining the building's historic features, such as high ceilings, tall windows, and terrazzo flooring. Upgrades include a new HVAC system, power distribution, and lighting.

The World Exchange Plaza Revitalization | Completed in 2024. In October, our team celebrated the grand opening of The WEP Revitalization Project, and we couldn’t be prouder of the result. This project was more than just a transformation of space—it revitalized purpose and reflected our team's creativity and dedication. Led by our talented architects, the WEP Revitalization has been a journey of innovation, collaboration, and relentless commitment. We're excited about this revitalized space's impact on the community and can't wait for the next challenge that will push us to explore even greater possibilities.

BDC Ottawa West | Completed in 2024. The office was designed to create a flexible, collaborative, and wellness-focused work environment. The space features a mix of private and open work areas, including focus rooms, meeting rooms, a wellness room, and versatile seating arrangements. The design integrates curvilinear and biophilic elements, such as maple hardwood millwork and natural daylight orientation, to unify the space and enhance connectivity. Key features include a raised louver wall for visual separation and daylight access, and a curved ceiling design with advanced acoustic solutions. BDC’s new Ottawa West office successfully delivers a collaborative, flexible workspace, earning recognition from the Ottawa Business Journal in their Best Offices Ottawa feature.

Wellings of Stittsville | Under Construction. This Project is the latest addition to Nautical Lands Group’s seniors’ living communities, and the first designed by Chmiel Architects. Located on Hazeldean Road, this multi-phase project features two six-storey buildings with 344 luxury apartments, 364 underground and surface parking spaces, and ample guest parking. The design focuses on creating comfortable living spaces that highlight the site’s natural features, with flow directed toward a central outdoor amenity area and Poole Creek’s walking trails.

797 Richmond Road Mixed-Use Apartments | Planning. This 10-storey apartment building features 71 modern units and a 2-level underground parking garage, and will be designed to meet enhanced accessibility requirements. The project is conveniently located adjacent from the future Westboro LRT station. Construction drawings are currently underway.

331 Cooper Retrofit | Nearing Completion. An adaptive reuse project transforming a vacant 1960s office building in downtown Ottawa into a vibrant residential space. This seven-story building now features 45 residential suites, a new penthouse level, and a landscaped roof terrace with a lightweight steel structure. Amenities include a gym, secure bike storage, and an expanded lobby. We’re proud to contribute to the revitalization of Ottawa’s downtown with a design that reimagines urban living, all done in a sustainable manner.
